Prof. Arsène BURNY is one of Europe's most distinguished scientists in the field of oncology and virology. Emeritus Professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, he is the author of over 350 international scientific publications in oncology, virology and AIDS research. His contributions to the understanding of leukaemia and cancer have saved hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide.
The Birth of TÉLÉVIE — 1989
In December 1988, Prof. Burny founded the TÉLÉVIE programme together with RTL Belgium and the Belgian National Scientific Research Fund (FNRS). The first edition took place in April 1989 — marking the birth of Europe's longest-running and most effective cancer research funding programme. In 36 years, TÉLÉVIE has raised over €266 million, funded 3,043 researchers and 2,939 oncological research projects. The childhood leukaemia recovery rate has risen from nearly 0% to 92% — a breakthrough whose scientific foundation was directly supported by TÉLÉVIE-funded research.
